We love shrimps in our household and a variety of recipes is a must have. (Seafood lovers will understand) My cookbook keeps growing with staple shrimp recipes and on this little space of mine, i share our favorites. We love our other shrimp recipes a lot but this crispy fried shrimp recipe definitely gets requested more often then others.
This crispy shrimp recipe does require a little bit of hands on prep work time that may seem like it takes a long time to make but it isn’t difficult at all. Also, shrimp cook fast so it does go pretty quick.
What you need to make crispy fried shrimps:
- 1lb Jumbo Shrimp (peeled and de-veined) (can also use extra-large shrimp)
- 1/3 Cup Plain Buttermilk
- 1/4tsp Ground Paprika
- 1/2tsp Onion Salt (i used Trader Joe’s brand)
- 1/2tsp Garlic Powder
- 1tsp fine sea Salt
- 1/4tsp Black Pepper
- 1 large Egg
Breading/ Seasoned Flour:
- 3/4cup All purpose Flour
- 3Tbsp Corn Starch
- 1/4tsp Ground Paprika
- 1/4tsp Onion Salt (Trader Joe’s)
- 1/4tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/4tsp fine sea Salt
- 3-4 Cups of grapeseed Oil for Deep frying (use a high smoke point oil for frying)
The bigger the pot you use, the more oil you’ll need. I recommend using a smaller pot and do more batches rather than fewer batches but using up and wasting more oil. The choice is yours.
How to make crispy fried shrimps:
- First, in a deep bowl combine raw shrimp, 1/3cup of buttermilk, 1 egg, 1/4tsp ground paprika, 1/4tsp garlic powder, 1/4tsp onion salt, 1tsp of salt and 1/4tsp of black pepper. Mix well to combine, cover with plastic wrap and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a different dish combine all the breading ingredients. 3/4cup all purpose flour, 3tbsp corn starch, 1/4tsp paprika, 1/4tsp onion salt, 1/4tsp garlic powder and 1/4tsp of salt. Mix flour.
- Then, in a small/medium sized pot, preheat 3-4 cups of oil to 350F on medium-high heat. (If you don’t have a thermometer, the best way to know if your oil is ready for frying is when you place a wooden spoon inside and you see many little bubbles around the spoon. If you don’t see that, do not add shrimps, continue preheating.)
- Once your oil temperature is hot enough, dip each shrimp into the flour mixture and deep fry in the hot oil until they are golden brown in color. Do this in batches, do NOT add too many shrimps at once for best results.
- Once your first batch is done, Use a slotted spoon to take out the shrimps and transfer them to a dish lined with a paper towels to absorb excess oil and repeat with the leftover shrimp.
- If you own a deep fryer, add oil and preheat to about 350F and deep fry in batches until the shrimps are golden brown in color.
