Sauteed mushrooms are tossed around with salt, pepper, fresh garlic and a splash of balsamic vinegar, the simple ingredients take this perfect side dish to the next level of delicious. Balsamic vinegar not only adds great flavor to this dish but also helps caramelize the mushrooms giving them that deep golden brown color.
This simple recipe doesn’t call for much effort but is a great side dish for your dinner party and makes the perfect addition to your last minute plans. Who doesn’t love easy side dishes?

These balsamic-glazed mushrooms recipe is one of my favorite ways cook up a mushrooms side dish alongside my crab stuffed balsamic mushrooms and Japanese BBQ mushrooms with vegetables. I love how this sauteed mushrooms recipe only requires 6 ingredients start to finish and the results are divine. I cannot even tell you just how many times i made these mushrooms to add to our steaks, pork chops or burgers and by the time the meat is cooked, my kids would attack the plate not leaving or hardly leaving anything to use.
When i first make a dish in my house and we fall in love with it from the first try, it automatically becomes a staple recipe and i only share staple recipes on here because they are truly worth sharing!
Are mushrooms healthy?
Mushrooms are a low calorie food and are loaded with many health boosting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They have long been recognized as an important part of any diet especially ones who are aiming for a low calorie diet. Mushrooms are low carb, have protein in them and are keto friendly.
How to make the best balsamic sauteed mushrooms?
- Do not soak whole mushrooms in water, they will absorb even more fluid then they already have and you might end up with soggy mushrooms. Instead, give them a quick rinse under water and lay them on a paper towel to absorb the water, or wipe off with a damp paper towel.
- Use a good quality oil such as olive oil or avocado oil.
- Pick up the heat, because mushrooms are a fungi, they have water in them and if the pan heat is too low or the pan is overcrowded, they will end up simmering in their own juices first before they begin to caramelize.
- Season with salt right away. Salt gives flavor and i have found that adding salt in the beginning allows it to penetrate through and in the end, the taste is better. (I am a huge mushroom fan and having that deep flavor of mushrooms is important to me).
- Give them time to caramelize. Caramelizing will bring out that beautiful golden brown color and add flavor. To do so, do not mix frequently, allow the mushrooms to sit on one side for a longer time period allowing it to form a crust.
- Finish the dish with plenty of garlic and balsamic vinegar (my best part) and mix frequently to avoid burning.
How do you store balsamic sauteed mushrooms?
A great way to store cooked mushrooms is in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Can i substitute salt for soy sauce?
In many dishes you can, in this dish i do not recommend it. Because i recommend salting the mushrooms in the beginning of the cooking process for best flavor, adding liquid soy sauce may cause the mushrooms to steam. They will not brown properly as well as prolong cooking time. This dish is already a great recipe with the most simple ingredients, it doesn’t ask for more flavor then what balsamic glaze gives it.
How do you reheat balsamic sauteed mushrooms?
Reheating on a skillet on medium heat or in the microwave, both work well and mushrooms do not lose any flavor. They are best when served right away after reheating.

Alright, like i have already mentioned, these pan fried mushrooms come together FAST! So fast that you’d want to prep your mushrooms and garlic before heating up your pan and have your balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper near by.
Ingredients:
- 1lb White button mushrooms
- 2TBSP Olive oil, grapeseed or avocado oil
- 3garlic cloves (fresh is best)
- 1tsp Kosher Salt (or to taste)
- 1/2tsp Ground black pepper
- Parsley for garnish if desired

Instructions:
- Clean and cut mushrooms into halves or fourths. Preheat pan or wok on medium-high heat and add 2Tbsp of oil into the pan. Add mushrooms and salt right away and fry the mushrooms until they develop a golden color, mixing frequently so they don’t burn and allowing them to cook evenly. (If your heat wasn’t high enough, the mushrooms may release their liquids. If that happens, that’s fine, just cook down the liquid until all of it has evaporated before proceeding with the recipe)
- Once Mushrooms are golden, add 1/2tsp black pepper, 3 cloves of pressed garlic and 1Tbsp of Balsamic vinegar. (Add more salt if needed)
- Toss everything together to incorporate, fry for another 30-60seconds and take off the heat.
- Sprinkle the dish with fresh chopped parsley or green onions if desired and Enjoy!

Can i use other mushrooms for this recipe?
Baby Bella mushrooms, portobello and cremini mushrooms are the same variety as white and brown button mushrooms just at different ages. Either will work. I have not tested this recipe with other mushroom varieties.
Can i use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic for this pan fried mushrooms recipe?
Please don’t! While you can usually substitute powdered garlic for fresh in other dishes, i do not recommend substituting for this dish. The end result will NOT be the same, not even the chopped garlic from a jar. The best way to get maximum flavor is to use fresh garlic for the best end result.
Can i substitute balsamic vinegar for anything else in this pan fried mushrooms recipe?
I have not tried any substitutes but i can already tell you the end result will be different. Try to get your hands on a bottle of balsamic vinegar, it is widely available in most grocery stores or click here to shop.
What can i serve with this mushroom dish?
These mushrooms tend to disappear just on their own but they would also pair well with a variety of other dishes. Here are some great options to serve with:
1. Grilled Meat: Steak, chicken, or pork chops complement sautéed mushrooms beautifully. The earthy flavor of the mushrooms enhances the richness of the meat.
2. Pasta: A creamy pasta, like fettuccine alfredo or a simple garlic butter pasta, goes well with sautéed mushrooms.
3. Mashed Potatoes: Creamy mashed potatoes are a comforting side dish that pairs wonderfully with sautéed mushrooms, especially when the mushrooms are served as a topping such as these.
4. Rice: A pilaf or wild rice works great to balance the flavors of the mushrooms.
5. Vegetables: Roasted vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, or green beans can be served alongside sautéed mushrooms for a well-rounded meal.
6. Egg Dishes: Serve them with scrambled eggs, an omelet, or even poached eggs for a flavorful breakfast or brunch.
7. Bread: A rustic loaf of bread or crusty baguette is perfect to crunch on with soft mushrooms.
These pairings bring out the wonderful flavor of the mushrooms and create a satisfying meal.
