strawberry buttermilk jello in serving cups with fresh raspberry fruit

A 3-ingredient jello dessert that is light with a fluffy mousse-like texture that is not overpowering sweet but just right. With a fresh fruit that adds the extra boost of color and flavor.

I absolutely love making this dessert for any or every gathering whether it is poured into one large serving bowl or into individual serving dessert cups.

This handy dandy Confectionery Funnel tool will help you distribute jello easily into serving cups without any spills.

It takes a few minutes to put together and it looks like I spent a whole lot of time on it. It is also such a crowd pleaser that it makes people come back to the table for seconds and thirds. It’s THAT good! Try it once and you’ll always keep making it too.

Is this a mousse dessert?

No. This jello recipe has a mousse-like fluffy texture but it is not a mousse dessert. A mousse is a light airy dessert that is typically made with whipped egg whites, heavy cream, a flavoring component and a sweetener where the egg whites act as a foaming agent.

In this recipe, everything is far more simple. You get the fluffy texture from cool whip also sometimes called whipped topping.

Why add Buttermilk?

Buttermilk is mainly used here because it helps to reduce the sweetness level without sacrificing the flavor. Buttermilk is very mild in flavor and you do not taste it in the end result as all. In fact, buttermilk is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, low in calories and fats making this satisfying dessert just a little bit less guilty.

Can i use other Jell-O Flavors?

Yes, this will work with any packaged Jell-O flavors, HOWEVER in my experience of making this for years, i have found that only the red jello flavors taste the best. (Strawberry, Raspberry or Cherry) The BEST one is the strawberry which is why this recipe calls for that specific one in the first place.

Can i make this in advance?

This is the perfect dessert to make in advance, It can last in the fridge for up to a week if you do not add fresh fruit right away.

If you need to make this in advance, i recommend to make it 1-2 days before your event and keep it in the fridge. Cover tightly with plastic wrap to prevent it from absorbing any other fridge smells or flavors. Add fresh fruit the day before or the same day you need it for best results.

Keep in mind, if you do make it in advance, the buttermilk jello mixture will set completely and the fruit will not stick to it if you decide to add it. Plan accordingly.

Instructions:

1. Dissolve 1 packet (6oz) jello in 1 cup of hot water and stir until all the crystals are dissolved.

Do Not follow the Jell-O package instructions for this recipe!!!

2. Then add 1 cup of cold water and let it cool at room temperature until you have a slushy mess. It should not be liquid anymore and it shouldn’t be completely set, just until it starts to come together. (see pictures for reference)

TIP: Use 1 cup of ice instead of cold water to speed up the setting process.

5. Now work quickly because it will set very fast. Transfer the jello into a large bowl or serving dish or into individual serving cups and decorate with your favorite fresh fruit berries.

Tip: Avoid adding or garnishing with acidic fruit as it may prevent jello mixture from setting.

6. Refrigerate! It is ready to serve once everything has completely set.

ENJOY!

Hi. How do you make sure there are no little jello pieces ? It looked like it was fully dissolved but then when I mixed it together there are little specs.

Hello, I want to make it in a glass baking dish I believe its 9×13? Basic Pyrex dish size. Will this amount be enough? Also can I make it on Friday and eat it on Sunday evening?
